How to turn an Instagram Reel into text

A Reel holds words in three places: the caption, the text on screen, and what is said out loud. Each comes out a different way. Here are the manual routes, then the short one.

Updated: September 30, 2026

First, work out where the words are

  • The caption: written by the creator under the video. Often the most useful part, and it is already text.
  • Text on screen: titles, ingredient lists, steps shown over the video.
  • Speech: what the person says. This is the hard one.

The manual way

  1. Copy the caption

Open the Reel on instagram.com in a computer browser and select the caption like any other text. If you only have the phone app, a screenshot and the next step do the same job.

  2. Lift the text on screen

Pause on the frame and take a screenshot. On an iPhone, open it in Photos and press and hold the text to select and copy it (Live Text). On Android, Google Lens copies text from a screenshot the same way.

  3. Get the speech

Turn on captions for the Reel if they are offered, and type out what you need. For a longer piece, play the Reel on one device and dictate into a notes app on another with the keyboard microphone. It is clumsy, and it works.

  4. Put the three together

Paste the caption, the screen text and the speech into one note, with the link to the Reel on top.

Your phone may also show live captions for whatever is playing. They appear as the words are spoken: made for following along, not for keeping a transcript.

Expect all of this to take several times longer than the Reel itself.

Try it here, without an account

Paste a public Reel below and the free tool returns the words: the transcript, or the text on screen when nobody speaks, with a short summary under it. A few videos a day per person; the app and the bot have no such limit.

The Inboxy way, for the Reels you want to keep

  1. Copy the link to the Reel

Tap Share on the Reel, then Copy link.

  2. Send it to Inboxy

Paste it into a chat with @InboxyAIBot in Telegram, or on an iPhone tap Share and pick Inboxy.

  3. Wait while it reads

Inboxy takes the caption, then transcribes the speech. If there is no usable speech, it reads the text shown in the frames instead.

  4. Read the note, or the full text

You get a note with the essence, key points and action items. In the Telegram bot, the Original button under the note shows the full extracted text.

What you can do with the text

  • Search it by meaning, not by the exact words.
  • Ask a question and get an answer that cites the Reel it came from.
  • Fact-check the claims in it against live web sources, in one tap.
  • Export your library to Markdown or JSON, on any plan.

Questions

How do I copy text from a Reel?

For the caption, open the Reel on instagram.com in a computer browser and select the text. For text shown in the video, take a screenshot and copy the text from it with Live Text on an iPhone or Google Lens on Android.

How do I get a transcript of what is said in a Reel?

By hand: turn on captions and type, or dictate the audio into a notes app. With Inboxy: send the link to the Telegram bot or share it to the iOS app, and it transcribes the speech for you.

Does it work if the Reel has only music and text on screen?

Yes. When there is no usable speech, Inboxy reads the text shown in the frames.
